The government said in August it was revoking the citizenship status given to more than 500 people during and just after the 1992-95 war by officials who bypassed regular procedures. Algerian national Atau Mimun, 37, had been given citizenship after coming as a Muslim volunteer fighter during the war, but his status was revoked and he was deported on Sunday, Dragan Mektic, an official of the Bosnian foreigners service, told Bosnian daily newspaper Nezavisne Novine. Mektic, who could not be reached independently, was quoted by the newspaper as saying the Algerian was considered a threat to national security. «We believe that he is connected with persons who are under surveillance for terrorist activities,» Mektic was quoted as saying, without elaborating. «He was deported to Algeria on Sunday. Bosnia was criticized after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the United States for allegedly granting citizenship to people who had links to international terrorism networks. The government responded by setting up a commission to review the cases of everyone naturalized since Bosnia’s 1992 independence. In total, 1,300 naturalization cases were reviewed by the commission, which made recommendations to the government on further action. The commission found that procedures were ignored in granting citizenship to hundreds of people from countries including Turkey, Egypt, Algeria, Syria, Tunisia, Sudan and Russia.
